Dr. Dustin J. Hopkin performs bone grafting at our oral surgery practice in Salt Lake City, UT, to replace lost bone tissue in the jaw. A type of pre-prosthetic surgery, it is commonly performed in preparation for dental implants or to address the effects of trauma or defects such as a cleft palate. Bone grafting may also be necessary following the removal of tumors. Dr. Hopkin and his team can perform bone grafting to address your needs and set the stage for a lasting restoration.
After losing a tooth, bone recession begins almost immediately. In addition to having an effect on your appearance and your ability to chew and speak properly, this recession can also cause your other teeth to shift out of place. By replenishing the bone with a graft, we can place a dental implant to prevent misalignment and further bone recession while providing the ultimate support for a crown, bridge, or denture. If you have waited to address a missing tooth, you have likely experienced some bone recession. We are prepared to help you take the first step toward restored function and aesthetics.

In some cases, a small degree of bone recession may not necessarily warrant a graft. For example, All-on-4® implants are specifically designed to accommodate patients who have suffered moderate bone recession, often eliminating the need for a graft. You can count on Dr. Hopkin to fully explain your restorative options and help you make the best choice in the interest of your long-term health and satisfaction.
You may need more than one procedure if Dr. Hopkin is using bone tissue harvested from another area of your body, such as the back of the jaw. However, donor tissue or synthetic tissue is also an option.
Once the graft is ready, we can begin your surgery. After administering an anesthetic, Dr. Hopkin will incise the gums covering the recessed area. He can then place the bone graft material, sometimes with a special silicone membrane to promote growth. Next, he will close the incisions with sutures. The recovery process can take up to six months as the graft and jaw become integrated. If your bone grafting procedure was performed for dental implants, Dr. Hopkin will schedule placement surgery once he has confirmed that the grafting site has completely healed. In limited circumstances, he can perform the bone graft procedure and implant placement in a single appointment. He can determine if this is appropriate for you during your consultation.
In many cases of tooth extraction, Dr. Hopkin will place a bone graft immediately afterward. This preserves the tooth socket and prepares it for a dental implant at a later time.
